Nancy Erickson 1945C Finished!

There isn't much else to say about this jacket. It is lined, buttons sewn, buttonholes made, hems finished, and it has been worn to work. Passed the test! I got several compliments and it is a comfortable garment to wear with either pants or a skirt. Here is the finished garment and the buttons in a closeup. ETA the wrinkles on the shoulder/chest area are due to the dress form/my body differences. On me, no wrinkles ;-)

I am slowly working on my Nancy Erickson jacket. I made a couple years ago, but they are too big and I am trying a new size. This is a size 10 with 5/8 inch seam allowances except the side seams which I made one inch. Fit is OK--with some feedback from a friend, I did trim 1/2inch from the shoulder seam before setting in the sleeves. The lining is sewn together and my next step will be to join the lining to the shell. Fabric is a suiting of unknown content that has been aging in the stash for years. I also cutout the sewing lesson pants from Burda 1/2012 from this fabric. I do not plan to wear them together!

I'm still subbing but gave Feb 3 As my last day! Great school and staff--I just want to be retired again! I'm hoping that he district will finally fly the position and hire a full time assistant principal. Economic times are tough but one can hope!

No resolutions here! But I do have some goals:

Finish my Nancy Erickson 1945C jacket in progress
Work a little--makes mr feel like a contributor
Don't work too much--need to enjoy life too!
Keep up the exercise daily--helps both mentally and physically. Can't change some of the medical issues, but I can keep going!
Sew when you/I want to. Make things ilike, don't have to be trendy!
Prepare for the move--not far,but everything has to be packed, trucked, unpacked. It will be worth it when it is DONE
Look for decorating advice. We are using current furniture but I'd like help with paint colors, accent pieces, etc. no idea where to find this...
Go to the beach often. It is restorative
Find peace, joy, and health in 2012

Follow up to Duo Tone Ottobre Dress

Here's a picture of DGD wearing the Ottobre jumper I made and blogged about in last post. I think she wore boots with this ensemble, hence the lovely pink socks. They didn't show when she was fully dressed. LOL.

I finally finished a little project for DGD for Christmas! It wasn't difficult, just confusing at several points. It is fullly lined so I hand picked the lining at the zipper and did a few little hand stitched touches. I bought the main fabric years ago--maybe for older DGD when she was small! I bought the bottom piece at Hancocks a couple of days ago with this project in mind. Both are cord--top not waled and bottom piece very fine wale.

As usual, the pattern is very well drafted and the pieces went together flawlessly. I had to pick out the invisible zipper because of pilot error--stitched too close to the coil and it wouldn't zip! Easy fix and now it is ready for the gift box. I'm also putting in red leggings and a red turtleneck top I bought at Target. It is cute and could be dressy, but I am hoping she will wear it to school and get some use from it!

All of the seams are top stitched, but since it is black on black, I did not think it would be useful to add more photos.

Missing Person

I know I have not been posting and guessing am on hiatus from sewing and blogging. I am embroidering silly shirts for teen grands and sewing simple AG doll clothes for the younger DGD. Our home is for sale so I'm trying not to make a big mess just in case someone wants to look. Not much traffic at this time of year!

I have lots of fabric and patterns and am anxious to make a few things, but will have to wait until other responsibilities move to the back burner. I am working as an elementary p for 2 more weeks and then I'll return to retirement. I am again reminded of the fabulous job teachers do, even in a difficult economy when some seem to under appreciate the time and caring the teachers put into their jobs. It is nice to be working with this community at the holiday time of year. Two of our school families lost homes this week due to fire. Food and clothing have already beendonatto the families and the children will have toys for the holidays.

No sewing, but life is good.

Quick Post--Not Sewing

Just to keep this blog in the cybersphere I'll add a short update. This blog started out as a way for me to document what I'd been sewing...not much this month. We had a great family memorial for my dad this past weekend in CA and followed up with a long lunch at the Cannery Restaurant in Newport Beach. Lots of laughter and stories...some sad, mostly fun memories of my dad's long life. I was surprised at how exhausted that left me. But, we came home this morning and after the laundry and our daily walk, I hope to get a few projects off of the sewing table.

I'm doing some embroidery designs on t shirts for my DDIL. She is running a relay marathon and I'm doing some silly designs on shirts for her team.

I want to finish the third pair of Bilbao pants that I almost finished at the Loes Hinse seminar. I did finish my Mallorca jacket and will post photos of that soon. I made 3 t shirts, and only one remains. Totally user error. I did not pretreat fabrics or even test a sample swatch of fabric. I am WAY too old for crop tops/belly shirts. So, although I cut all three from the same pattern, only one is really fully wearable. One is OK under a jacket after I let out the hem, and one went in the trash.

Tonight DH and DS are going to the UNLV basketball game and I'm watching the 3 kidlets. Then, back to work in the morning. I am subbing again--at a delightful elementary school. Being an assistant principal is so much more enjoyable than being the principal! This job is done before the winter break and then I'm taking a long break :>)

Loes Hinse Seminar

Having a wonderful time--wish you were here! What fun to sew with a group of like-minded ladies who share their talents freely with no hint of one upmanship! I love Loes's patterns because they are so versatile and they fit me with little or no alteration. That never happens for me with any other line. I've seen many iterations of patterns using a wide variety of fabrics--so many clever ideas to immitate in the future!

I'll share some photos when I get home, but I've made a couple of pairs of the narrow version of the Bilboa pant, a Mallorca jacket and a few perfect tee t shirts. Tomorrow is the final day and I'm hoping to cut out a Biarritz jacket/cardigan. We will see if I get that done. Seems I've messed up my lower back by sitting on the bed. Go figure! Not even an exciting story to tell. I'm hoping it returns itself to normal by morning. Not whining, just explaining that I may not get as many garments sewn as I hoped to/usually do.

Loes's boutique has many lovely items, as usual! I was drawn to jackets made from vintage fabrics, tops using stretch lace with interesting selvages used at the hemline, unique necklaces and scarves...so many pretties!

I hope sleep comes soon and that I wake up ready to sew!

ABO Vest

Please excuse the phone photos, but I'll never get a picture up if I don't use my phone! I know the vest is a bit wrinkly, but I want to post these and then get on to something else :-)

I liked both of the motifs--the dots on light and the multicolored stripes. So--I made sure that the dots were prominent on the front and the stripes dominate the back. I like to wear it with the collar folded back a bit and the shirt underneath unbuttoned at the collar. I did not put buttons on the vest.

Today I traced the new pattern in a size small and will make a few muslin/wearable? garments to try out the sizing. The ABO jacket and vest are XSM, but I think that is too small for the new A Cute Angle tops.

We are going back to CA too--I'm going to Palm Springs for 4 days with my best friends. Some of us met in grade school, but we have all been good buddies since high school. No husbands allowed. We meet every few years for a long weekend and just enjoy the fellowship, love, laughs, and tears. Then I have a couple of days of rest and will take off to attend my annual Loes Hinse seminar. That should provide some new pictures to share!

Sewing and Other Stuff

I have done a little sewing--made my vest from ABO out of Japanese cotton. Love it! I will take a photo when I am home and have my trusty camera available. Or, maybe DH will take a photo if I wear it while we are away.

I worked, I went to see my DGS perform and earn his 2nd degree black belt in combined martial arts. He is amazing--won best tester of his class of 8. he broke the studio record for several physical activities. He is amazing. He is 12 years old. I am truly in awe of his dedication and drive. We don't need to mention his skills as a wake boarder, skier, student, etc. How lucky is he that his older sister is just as unique in her own areas. Oh yeah, this may be a blatant example of Grandma bias, but that's what Grandmas do!!!

Now I'm deeply engrossed in a more somber activity--settling my dad's estate. Hopefully, things will go smoothly at the broker tomorrow and the several banks can be visited and accounts closed. I am armed with death certificates, a tough hide, and a wonderful husband. DH has been my rock for the past 43 years, but never more so at the times of family sorrow.

I'll be back to sewing in a week or two. All of this stuff has meant time in the car. Hours and hours of time in the car. I'm not a whiner by nature, but my back has been whining at me. This too shall pass. Be back soon with some fun projects! I'm looking forward to going to Loes's seminar at the end of the month--I'll certainly have some new goodies to share after that!

ABO Italian linen shirt

Finally finished! I used my arsenal of machines yesterday to finish the details of my linen shirt.

My newly aquired Singer 201A made some awesome buttonholes.

My Babylock Ellisimo made sewing on buttons a breeze.

I used my Bernina 1130 to finish stitching down the back facing.

This piece is an adaptation that Louise shared at the ASG convention. It makes the collar insertion so much easier and the wide facing allows for a label or even embroidered personalization. Louise also said it mimics RTW trends. Anyway, it is a clean finish and easier to do. That's a winner in my book!

DH chose the buttons and I like his choice!

Now on to make some coordinating pants from some lovely brown linen I also got from Louise at ASG.

My dad has been on hospice care for over two years. Today he passed away. My dad was 95 last June. He was an electrical engineer, graduate of UC Berkeley in 1938. He was a Professional Engineer, PE, and worked in the aerospace industry. He was born and raised in Anaheim, CA. He and his brother were avid bodysurfers, favoring Corona del Mar and San Clemente. He married my mom in 1943 in Cambridge, MA while attending Harvard for Army Air Corps training in radar technology. He later served in England and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He had a successful career and retired in 1974. Travel and community activities kept him busy. He had declined markedly in the past few years and was not able to participate in his life. He hated that. We'll miss you, Dad.

UFOs Finished--Buttonholes Complete

I bought a Singer 201 to use as a buttonholer. I love it! I finished two garments I made over the summer in CA but brought home to finish using this machine. First is the ABO jacket I basically made at the ASG convention in a fabulous class with Louise Cutting. I am very pleased with the finished product and will wear it with many other items already in my wardrobe. I also have some black fabric I purchased from LC destined to be a pair of pants.

Next is a Loes Hinse Tuscan Shirt. I have had this pattern for years and never really warmed up to it. On Stutchers Guild, Tonia made several in a weekend wardrobe sewing frenzy and I really liked the ones she made. So, fast forward to my summer sewing and voila a Tuscan Shirt for me. I made a small from the envelope and love the fit. For this one I chose not to put the button/buttonhole at the cuff as I think I'll wear it open over a t shirt, more of a lightweight jacket. I'm really liking this pattern. The construction was easy and fast too! Sorry about the wonky angle on the photo--the breeze is coming up and I just took a quick shot!

I also finished this Discover Something Novel vest--just to have it finished! I'm not sure vests are for me, and I do not like the pants I made to go with it. Maybe wrong size (huge) and maybe wrong style for me? I wear them when we drive back and forth to the beach. They feel like jammies and don't feel too stylish on my short body. Anyway, I have no more coordinating pant fabric so I'm not sure about this one. But, I wanted it finished even if I donate it. Interesting construction and fabulous directions as always with Louise Cutting patterns!

Now, between swimming with the grands and straightening up the house, maybe I can make a quick run to get some buttons for the remaining ABO shirt! Whew--it feels good to get these items off of the sewing table and into the closet (or donation bag!).

Yikes! Long time since I posted anything. I've done some sewing, but I'm also working and don't seem to have the energy required to sew at night. I'm a retired school admin and am subbing as a principal for a few weeks. I forget how physically and emotionally draining this job is. Won't be sorry to turn in my keys (again) in a couple of weeks!

I hope I can attach a photo DH took this AM with my iPhone. I wore this to work today--ABO jacket and OS pants. The pants are from a drapey textured fabric I bought from Sharon at Casual Elegance. Easy and comfortable to wear. This time I made a small+ with no alterations. I'll wear them for a day to see if the fit seems right...(Since I had to play with the photo--I'll add that by the end of the day I kind of had "droopy drawers." Not sure what to do about this...)

I have another ABO almost finished. This one is from Italian linen and will function as a shirt.

I just finished a pair of these pants. I am so pleased with the fit that I will make a pair from decent fabric and get a photo posted soon!

We are heading home tomorrow after a wonderful summer at the beach. Time to get back to a more "normal" schedule. I'm going to work for a few weeks and DH is going to a week-long photoshop seminar. Our condo is getting a facelift while we are gone--paint, crown molding, new toilet, valance boxes, etc.

Time for change and to celebrate DGD's birthday. Photo soon of the one seams.

I bought a pink t at the local discount store and used the skirt fabrics as decoration around the front neckline. It is pretty simple, but I think it will make my DGD happy to have items that go together! The flash has blown out the colors of the skirt, but the previous blog entry shows the true colors.

Skirt from Ottobre Design 4/2011

Here is another skirt made from a pattern in the most recent children's Ottobre. The fabric is a fabulous batiste in pink and an English netting in ivory from Fabric Land in Orange, CA. Both behaved so well while sewing! The waistband treatment is from a scrap of cotton lycra knit--think it was purchased at Michael Levine in Los Angeles. I made a size 128 for my almost 9 YO grand daughter.

Just a fun project. Again, I need to figure out a shirt embellishment for an outfit. DGD likes to have her garments GO together.

ASG Recap

Day Two is here! I'm just checking in quickly before heading out. Yesterday I went to Louise Cutting's session--we made the ABO jacket from some wonderful rayon fabric. All pieces save the right front were from the rayon. The right front piece was created by joining a variety of fabric strips to create unique and different "fabric" from which the right front piece was cut. We got lots of tips and ideas for other garments. I'm going to make a sleeveless ABO from some Japanese cotton I bought last night from Louise. I need to go back to her booth to take a picture of the vest to keep my memory accurate! Will try to include that photo at the end. Louise is a wonderful teacher. She is humorous, knowledgable, patient, and so creative! I also took her one seam pants class! I'm going to tweak the pattern using her detailed directions and make myself a pair. She insists the first pair must be made from the ugliest fabric in the stash! LOL!

Well--you can see I didn't get much further on posting the info. I have almost finished the ABO jacket, but will wait until we go home next week so I can use the machine I bought to do button holes. I also bought some fabrics from Louise. Left to Right--Japanese cotton I plan to use for a sleeveless ABO jacket. AKA a vest! LOL! I'm not a real fan of vests, but saw both Louise and Sandy wear versions of this garment and I am anxious to give it a try. Second is some lovely Italian linen for pants--not sure what pattern. The third piece is exquisite linen for a blouse, and the final piece is a rayon mix to coordinate with the jacket above. That will be pants, but I'm not sure what pattern I will use.

More about sessions--I spent a day with Susan Khalje learning hand sewing techniques used in constructing couture garments. I can now confidently use the whip stitch, overcast, back stitch, catch stitch, pick a zipper, bind a buttonhole, and some other tricks I noted in my handouts. If anyone has an opportunity to take a class or workshop with Susan, do not hesitate. She is the kindest, most supportive and patient person. I wasn't sure I really wanted to take this class and thought I might be a dropout after lunch. Not so! It was wonderful. The lesson, the other students, and the teacher. Primo.

Here is Sandy, Louise Cutting's assistant, wearing a white shirt version of the ABO jacket with a vest version over the top. You can see that she lowered the height of the collar on the vest so that it would allow some of the white shirt's collar to show. Similarly, she lengthened the white shirt so that it would also show beneath the black vest. Very sharp look!

Below are the vest and jacket versions of the ABO jacket--in green. I think the two garments to the right of the green vest are from the soon-to-be-released pattern.

I also took a pants fitting class from Judy Kessinger and a blouse class from Peggy Sagers. Also good classes full of useful information. Finally, I took Anne St Claire's class in changing necklines on knit shirts. Can't wait to get started making some changes to my favorite knit top patterns. Whew! Great convention! I met a few new friends and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

I've Been Sewing--Not Posting! Loes Hinse and Vogue Projects

I made the Katherine Tilton Vogue pattern tee shirt. Not sure it is for me, but it went together very easily and it fits nicely. I made the size 12 and it is a bit roomy. For future reference, I would make the neck binding piece a bit longer. It is easier to trim off excess than to piece or recut a binding that is too short. Just barely stretched this to fit.

Then I was inspired by Tonia on Stitchers' Guild who made an entire wardrobe of garments in a weekend. I took longer, but made 3 pairs of pants and 2 tee shirts. I made one European pair without the front zip, one with, and a pair of Cruise pants that I had modified with the zip front from the European pattern. All will fit, don't need alterations, and will blend with my wardrobe of browns, tans, and black. The olive linen Euros with the zip will blend as well. Sorry they are wrinkled, but I wore them with a white linen Talbots top to go see The Help last week. The red tee shirt will go with either pant. I'm going to wear the short sleeved tee with some black pants and a light black cardigan. Whew!

Finished ABO and Skirt from Ottobre Design 4/2011

Just some odds and ends to post....I went back to LV for a few days to celebrate youngest DGS's 5th birthday. How fun! I prewashed a pile of fabrics from my quick trip to the Los Angeles fabric district, cut out a few things, and hope to do some sewing now that I'm in cool weather territory again. But, I did finish the hems, button holes, and buttons on the ABO muslin jacket. Ready to cut the jacket for the ASG class I'm taking with Louise Cutting.

Second, I made a cute little skirt from the most recent Ottobre for kids. It is design 31, the frilly skirt with a slight modification. I cut the ruffles 2 inches wide--my error, but I think it still turned out cute. The fabric is a cotton batiste I bought locally at Fabric Land. It has the softest hand--really nice fabric. I also made a long sleeved tee shirt from the Ottobre Design pattern 301 and leggings #32 from same current issue of Otto.

No photos of the tee and leggings--I'm trying to figure out an embellishment for the tee shirt so that the combo doesn't look like PJs with a skirt over top...I'll share those pieces when I've got a solution ;-)

Almost Done! Anything But Ordinary Muslin

This is my muslin for the ASG project--trying out size and fit of the pattern. I made an XS per Louise's advice. It fits fine--a little short for my taste, so I think I will add 1.5 inches to the lengthen line of the front and back pattern pieces where indicated. Wonderful pattern--great directions, and perfectly drafted. I'm not sure I would select this for myself, based on drop shoulders and no real shaping, but I think it's cute and may wear it more than I think. I took my Singer 301 home, so I will save the buttons and button holes for a future date. I also need to hem the sleeves. No biggie.

Summer Sewing? Not so much...

I have been enjoying the summer here at the beach. We are busy as volunteers at the Aquarium of the Pacific and being tourists in my childhood neighborhoods. I do sew here--have a full complement of sewing machines, etc., but also have lots of other things to occupy my time. I have worked a bit at the sewing machines in the past few weeks...

I made DGD a pair of leggings from the most recent Ottobre Design magazine.

I am working slowly on a muslin for an Anything But Ordinary jacket. I'm going to attend the ASG convention in LA next month and will be taking Louise Cutting's all day class which uses this pattern. I want to be sure I have the pattern size just right. But, I only sew a seam or two a day and then get distracted! I am off to the Long Beach Quilt Show in a few minutes. See? Distracted again.

Let's hope everyone is having a summer full of pleasant distractions!

Another Look at Quincy Pants and LH Perfect tee

Here's a quick photo of the pants--made from some really poor quality ponte de roma I ordered from Fabric.com. There really are a musliin, but I can wear them for beach trips, etc.

I think they are too big around at the waist and will size down. I made the loop accent from the same fabric and it is definitely too bulky. I think I may make them again, however, as I like the more narrow leg and the loop and button accent is kinda trendy.

The tee is just a Perfect Tee from my TNT Loes Hinse pattern. I bought the fabric from The SEwing Workshop and I really like the funky knit. I have some more in the stash and may use it for accents along the neckline of a plain black tee. We'll see...

SEwing Workshop Quincy Pants--Fail This Try

I've not made any Sewing Workshop patterns--own a bunch, but never sewed any. Go figure. So, I just got the Quincy pattern and thought I'd use the pants (simple) as a starting point. I measured me and went by the pattern envelope to choose a size. I make a S in Loes Hinse, with very few alterations. I made a M in the Quincy and they are HUGE. I'll try a small tomorrow.

I did finish my 2 pairs of Europeans from the fabric I purchased locally at Fabric Land in Orange. No hitches in the road in making these. No photos because it is just more of the same! The pants are both in the brown family--a tan wool blend that feels like a soft wool but also washes! The others are a medium brown with a narrow white pinstripe. They will work in my wardrobe--have lots of other things I can wear with both. I also made my first Swing Skirt--easy and so cute! I do want to branch out and use other patterns with success, however, so I'm going to give the Small in the Quincy a try tomorrow.

Has anyone else made these pants? I'll check over on Patternreview later. Should have checked sooner, eh?

Loes Hinse Paris Jacket--Short on Fabric

Well. long time no post! I've been enjoying my grand kids and the great Southern California summer weather. Perfect time to work on a (mostly) wool jacket, don't you think??? Anyway, I thought I'd make one more Paris jacket only to find that I did not have enough fabric in the remnant I'd purchased from Sharon. I was only short a few inches on the sleeve, but this was not the type of garment that I would like with 3/4 sleeves. Hmmmm...what to do? I decided to take advantage of the different patterns on the front and back sides of the fabric and pieced the cuff/hem/bottom of the sleeves. To make them less of a unique or obvious attempt to save, I put in a couple more pieces of contrast--flipped the under collar piece and added a little triangle of detail from the side seams using the reverse side of the fabric. Some might say that I used the "wrong" side as the basic jacket, but it was the side I liked most. Loes had a jacket made from this side and I really liked it. Not the same pattern, just the same choice of "right" side.

I'm pretty pleased with the result--still need shoulder pads and then I'm going to take it to the cleaner for a good steam/press. I miss my steam generator iron down here, but a condo just doesn't have enough room for ALL of my sewing goodies. I put most things away when the grands come and now I am in the process of finding where I hid the dangerous items. A fun treasure hunt!

My next projects are a couple of pairs of European pants made from some lovely fabric purchased at a local fabric shop in Orange, CA. Nice store, lovely fabrics and personnel. I need to get over there more often when we are in the area.

Slow Sewing

I've been tracing patterns and working on a Loes Hinse Paris jacket. This jacket is not difficult to sew, I have just been lagging on finishing it. I'm not thrilled with my fabric choice so it's my own problem. Maybe tomorrow?

Burda Kids' tee and a Loes Hinse Dress--A Couple of Finished Items ***Photos Added

First--the French Country Dress is NOT a difficult garment to sew--but you must cut out all of the required pieces! I drove myself crazy trying to put this together minus one crucial piece...needless to say, I ripped and sewed and ripped some more. Finally, I reread all of the directions, looked again at the fabric layout, etc and realized what a dope I'd been. It is finished and I plan to wear it to my granddaughter's dance recital tonight. Maybe DH will snap a quick picture--I left my camera at our condo.

Second, I finished the little Burda tee shirt for my DGD. It is from the May 2011 issue, pattern #138 with short sleeves. It is cute, it was easy, and again I procrastinated on getting it done. I made the ankle pants with bottom bands for her from the same issue. Those were done several weeks ago, but the shirt remained on the sewing table...outfit is finished now that school is out! Maybe DH will snap a photo of the tee shirt too. Fingers crossed!

I'm hoping to do a few things here before we go back to cooler climates on Monday. It is a 4-5 hour drive, so I like to have some handwork ready to do while we are on the road. DH does all of the driving, so I have some time to sew on snaps, buttons, etc. I find that the natural light in the car is very helpful to my old eyes.

I also bought a Singer 301 as a dedicated button hole maker. Whooppee! It works and I really had no problems in remembering how to use the buttonhole attachment. It is just like the one I learned to sew with--Mom had a Featherweight with all of the attachments that came out over the years. I have her machine, but no attachments. Anyway, this has been an area of frustration for me, even though I have a couple of pretty fancy machines in the sewing studio(s). Now I can have a sure thing buttonhole and that makes me happy!

One of Those Weeks...

I have been working on a Loes Hinse French Country Dress all week. My latest step was to rip out half of the sewing as I finally got my head around the pieces and the directions! Ugh! I hate it when the only excuse I have is operator error! Hopefully, there could be a photo in the next day or two.

DH and I went out to lunch today and I wore a pair of Oxford zip pants and a twinset from the Perfect Tee pattern. I made the short sleeve version and then a cardigan from the long sleeve tee. I added 3/8 inch to the front edge and did NOT place the front on the fold when cutting it out. I rounded the top of the center front openings and just serged and stitched the entire neck/front edge. Easy and very pleased with the outcome. I cut this out months ago and finished it (both pieces) during my recent flurry of UFO finishing.

These pants seem a bit long, but I'm wearing my comfy CROC sandals, not shoes with any heel. This is the pair of pants made from the same faux linen as my last Paris jacket. The sweater set is from some Missoni-like knit I bought from Sharon at Casual Elegance. This outfit is as comfortable as pajama pants and a tee shirt, but I think it presents to the public in a more positive way!

Catching Up--Miscenaleous Photos

I finished up some UFOs before leaving for the summer. I have more to do, but here is the beginning of the projects!

First--the green boiled wool jacket. I finished by covering large snaps with silk and then sewing black buttons on the right side for some ornamentation. I'm happy with it--I'll wear it this fall when the weather is cooler! LOL

Next is a long sleeved Perfect Tee that I started last fall when I returned from the last LH seminar. I had only sewn the shoulder seams and finished the neckline. I got out the Featherweight my mother left me and wanted to give it a little workout to ensure it is kept in good running condition. No problems at all in sewing the sleeve and side seams as well as the hems. Great results! The machine works perfectly and the shirt is finished!

The third item is a LH Paris jacket made from some faux linen purchased at Fabric Depot in Portland, Oregon. I'd been at a Patti Palmer fitting workshop and she had worn a suit made from the fabric. I had to have it, but it's been maturing in the stash for 6 years! I also made some Oxford zip pants from the fabric, so I have a "suit" if I want to wear the pieces together.

ETA--don't know what happened to the info on the skirt. It is the Loes Hinse new Sarong Skirt. Fabric from Casual Elegance. I'm pleased with both the skirt and the fabric.

Clever/Lazy Approach to Loes Hinse Oxford Zips

I trace all of my LH patterns--I use them often and like the Sweedish Tracing Paper for most patterns. I have made many pairs of European Pants and a few less of the Oxford Pants. My traced patterns are already shortened to fit my leg length, scooped to account for gravity of the posterior, and generally dependable to produce a pair of pants I can wear without alterations.

So--Loes recently gave directions for modifying the Oxford pants to make them from a woven. Not much change, but a zip front accomodates the need to fit the waist over the hip without have a lot of bulk at the waist. I have done this in the past to the cruise pant with success.To do the Cruise version, I put the European front pattern over a Cruise pattern and retraced the entire front. When I was reading The Look publication recently, I had an "ah-hah" moment! I came up with the following clever/lazy method for altering any LH pant pattern into a zip front!

1. I traced the top ten (or so) nches of the European Pant front

2. I got out my previously-traced Oxford pattern

3. I placed the short piece of the Euro pant pattern on top of the Oxford pant front

I cut out the pattern! Easy-Peasy! I did not change the side seam, just the front seam down to the dot on the pattern. On the cruise pants, I did slightly decrease the width of the front pattern piece, gave it more of a definition to the waist area.

Loes Hinse City Dress/Reno fabric

I made the City Dress this morning--traced it last night and cut it out this morning. After our morning walk, I sewed it up. Easy dress and I like the style. I made it slightly different than the pattern directions, per Loes's idea shared at a seminar. The skirt is only about 1.5 inches wider than the bodice making more of a column skirt. The fabric is a rayon twill I bought at the Mill Ends store in Reno last week. DH thought the fabric was kind of blah--his idea to make the coordinating necklace. We'd seen one at a store in the mall and he suggested making one to complement the dress I was planning to make. Unusual for him! I still need to hem the dress and that probably means I need to cut off some length prior to reserging the bottom edge.

I've been sewing quite a bit of Loes garments lately. I'll share my tweaked Oxford pants tomorrow (or soon!). I found a quick and clever (maybe lazy) way to adapt the European zipper finish to the Oxford pattern. I really prefer the waist finish with the front zipper to the elastic waistband. I have a perfect tee and a Paris jacket to share as well.

My local sewing friend made about 20 garments prior to a recent road trip. I can't compete with her, but I am trying to use up some of the stash I continue to accumulate around here!

I am searching for a usable copy of the Portofino Dress and the Trio Skirt patterns. It doesn't need to be unused, but I need to be able to trace the small size from each of these. Hard to find!

More Fun with the Kids

We are having a fun time with the older grands this week while their parents have a quick escape. Kids are at school and activities most of the time, but they still require transportation, food, money, etc. Great kids! We have enjoyed spending time up here--lovely walking trails and lots of birds and wildflowers along the way.

We went to the Patagonia Outlet today. Beautiful clothing, but I don't really need more outdoor gear. We also went to the Mill End store where I just wanted to look. Dumb idea. I got 3 pieces of rayon for dresses and some lovely brown tencel for pants. I had been searching online for the rayon so I was pleased to find a couple of pieces I really liked. The tencel for pants is very nice weight and so soft. I will take this fabric to the beach for summer sewing in a couple of weeks.

I just can't escape the sewing completely!

Ottobre Ruffle Tee

Tee shirt for DGD from scraps of a tee I made for myself! I used the tee shirt from the most current Ottobre magazine--sorry, don't have it close at hand. She was pleased with it, and I always enjoy making her things. EASY shirt--just serged the seams and neckline. Turned the neckline under 3/8" or so and stitched it. No hems! You can tell it was late in the day, but the shirt still looks cute!

Here's the shirt I made for myself. I cut mine on the bias so the ruffles are a diagonal. It was a kit to make a tank top from Peggy Sagers--pattern and fabric included. When it arrived, I realized that I would never wear a tank top, so I made my trusty Loes Hinse Perfect Tee with short sleeves and think it will be a fun summer tee. Again, serged seams and no hems. What could be easier? I did learn a few things--should have cut the pattern piece out as full front and back pieces rather than messing with the fold. That was not the most successful part of the project, but I think it will be OK! It is just a fun trendy shirt that won't have to stand the test of time!

I also made a pair of Louise Cutting Discover Something Novel ankle pants from a nice linen. Love the pattern and the drafting--they went together so well and the directions are marvelous. The pants on me? Not so much. My DGD said, "Grandma, those are some BIG pants!" when I wore them over to her house one day. So--comfy, soft, well made...maybe OK for wearing at the beach. Live and learn!

Finished project! Loes Hinse Europeans with Button Closure

There had been some mention on Stitchers' Guild/Loes Hinse thread about replacing the hook and eye closure at the front waistband with a button and buttonhole. Loes has sold this style of pant in her Carmel boutique. I have made quite a few pairs of this pattern of pants and really like the option of having a button closure. I made these to go with an inexpensive sweater purchased at The Limited this spring. I found the fabric at JoAnn on sale, so it was a thrifty outfit. We went to dinner tonight at a local casino. You always need a sweater year round here. It can be cold, or it can be Air Conditioning. I will enjoy wearing these pants for the summer as well.

We have been having fun visiting and chauffeuring grand kids the past week or so. Still on duty for a couple more days. I brought some Onion patterns with me and have traced them in my size. I also traced a Louise Cutting vest and pant outfit and even bought some fabric ready to cut and sew when we get home. I also traced a t shirt and some pants from the May 2011 Burda for younger DGD. I went to the local JoAnns and got some cute fabric for these too-- even cut them out.

Sewing? Not so much. I did get out DIL's machine and did a few things. DIL does not sew and is usually more frustrated with this machine than anything. DH cleaned out the bobbin race for me and removed some major thread nests! LOL. I bought the machine for her when she showed some interest in learning to hem pants, etc. It is a simple Brother from their online mall. It worked fine for me after a little adjustment. But, I can see that it is a bit temperamental. I started the pants for DGD but came to a point where she will need to try them on. They have a cute finish with a band at lower leg and will need to be adjusted for length before I attach that. I also need some interfacing and hate to buy more when I have LOTS at home.

I do appreciate the sewing room I have at home, but also see that a simple machine could suffice!

I'm also posting photos of two pairs of Loes Hinse pants I made since the last photos...the darker ones are Euros from the same fabric as the Retro jacket I posted a couple of months ago. The lighter ones are from a seminar pattern, fuller than the the Euros but with a similar waistline treatment. Obviously, I still need to hem them. I'm so bad about photos that I wanted to at least document these garments before they get in the closet and I forget that the reason I started this blog was to keep a record of what I'd accomplished. Mostly just for me, but to share too!

If you click on the bottom photo you can see people playing golf in my back yard ;-). LOL I don't play, but I enjoy the open space that I don't need to mind!

I haven't done much! I did make the pants to go with the Retro jacket I made in Feb. I have cut out and sewn another pair of tan pants from a LH pattern I traced at a seminar. I need to finish the waist treatment and hem. Just wanted to check in!

We spent last week at our condo in CA with special guests! Our older grandkids 14 and 11) flew down from Reno for 4 days. We spent 3 of those days at Disneyland. We had a blast!

More sewing to appear this week and I will post photos ;-). The weather here is perfect, so being outside is a pull!

Photo Catch Up--Burda and Loes Hinse

I love the striped Perfect Tee shirt--I can make these very quickly, they fit, and they look pretty good on me! The cream pants I'm not sure about. They look fine, but the fit is not as comfy as when made from softer wovens or knit fabrics. We'll see.

Second outfit is the Burda drape neck top from an old Burda Petite magazine. It is OK. The fabric is from FabricMart and I usually like what I order...just not sure about this one. The pants are morphed LH cruise pants that I made with a modified European pant waist and front fly. Just took a little off of the side seams and added the fly extension to the front of the cruise pant. Sometimes I want side pockets for my phone or keys and these are perfect. I will probably wear them with a black or white top for summer.

I made a Sewing Workshop eshrug yesterday too. (No photo ) I made it from French terry and I think I will like it as a layering piece. The drafting is great--the sleeves went in without any effort and the sewing took about 30 min start to finish. Great!

I have some fabric and patterns on the cutting table...wonder if I'll change my mind before I start cutting!

Sewing, Remodeling, Dentists...

Just a few of the activities occupying my time at present. I made a pair of LH European pants from some of the Casual Elegance linen-look fabric recently posted. I like them, don't love them. They may need to spend some "time out" time in the closet before I make a final decision. I also made a Perfect Tee from a coordinating fabric and LOVE it. I always know the PT will fit so there is no guess work on this one! Made a third top from a well-aged Burda Petite magazine. It is OK. I was trying out a new style and I'm not sure it's for me. I'll post photos when I get the camera recharged.

We remodeled our kitchen over the past month--new countertops, a redesign on the previous eating bar, and new fireplace surround and hearth. Makes the place look updated and that's a good thing! I am allergic to dust, however, so it has been a bit of a trial for the past few weeks. DH did the tear down with a crowbar in one hand and a shop vac hose in the other. Much better than the "pros" would have done. The granite is gleaming, the new backsplash makes me smile, and it was all worth the confusion. DH sent me some photos he took of this project, so I will share those soon too.

Finally, I visit the dentist 4 x a year for routine cleaning, etc. and still have constant challenges with my dental care. Ugh. I had a crown prep today and will get the permanent one in a couple of weeks. I have many others to keep this one company, so nothing new. Just sort of slows me down for a while.

Just checking in to remind myself of the projects I've sewn. No new jacket this month, but I'll catch up soon!

One Jacket Done--Sort of!

I have had so much difficulty in finishing this jacket that I'm not going to worry about trying to fix these photos too. The jacket is finished, but not the closures. Tried to make buttonholes on 2 layers of scrap fabric and neither of my machines can handle the thickness. So, I am rethinking the way I want to secure the front of the jacket. It is 82 here today, so I'm not in dire need of a jacket. I needed to finish this to get it off my list of to do items.

Things I liked about the jacket! Topstitching! If you click on the photo you can see the stitching in an enlarged photo. I also liked the lycra binding trim for pockets and the hem. I would have preferred a matching color, but black is OK with me. I think the jacket will be cute with jeans, dress pants, etc. Any ideas for the clusures? I'm thinking snaps, but maybe there is another option???

Next on the list is the dress/shorts pattern for DGD.

Project Number One--Trudi Jansen pattern #301--Boiled Wool Jacket

I am making this from fulled wool I bought from Fabric Mart--sort of a sage green. I love the pattern and the fabric, just not the fit. I used pattern measurements and cut a size 12. It is huge. I am trying to scale it down, but may just finish it and donate the jacket. We'll see. I put it aside for a little while to let it kind of settle down!

Project Number Two--Skirt from Simplicity 2605 View F

This is a very simple straight skirt with a yoke waist finish. I'm making it from some lime green linen to match a muslin jacket I made last fall of a Loes Hinse seminar pattern. I like the jacket and thought a spring suit might be nice to have in the rotation. Pattern is cut, marked and edges serged. I washed the skirt fabric and it really raveled in spite of serging the ends. I will need to dry clean the suit! Should finish this one this afternoon.

Project Number Three--Summer dress for DGD from Simplicity 2677
I tried to copy and paste the image from the Simplicity site, but I guess I can't do that.
I'm making this from some coordinating quilting cottons. Think I'll make dress view A and shorts view F for modesty on the playground. Pattern and fabric waiting on the cutting table.

Between some family issues and ongoing sciatica, I think my life and my sewing are a little disorganized these days. But, I keep coming back to the sewing room for my escape. Good place to have ;-)

I finally finished this little jacket for my DGD. It is a size 128 from the spring issue of Ottobre magazine from 2011. The fabric has been well aged in the stash--it is a sweatshirt fleece, but the knit is from selvage to selvage. I think I bought it from a local independent shop which may have purchased factory overruns. Anyway, it worked well enough for me for this design. I also have a skirt cut out to go with this--basically a jeans yoke with a black watch plaid skirt gathered to the yoke. I have had two sewing machines go to the shop since I started construction of the jacket...so it has been a work in progress for quite a while!!!

I am sewing in the JAM group on Stitchers' Guild, and this is my third jacket for 2011. I have a fulled wool jacket cut out for me. That will be jacket #4. Hope I get it finished before the winter in Las Vegas is over! I am using Trydy Jansen Design #301, the Boiled Wool Jacket. It is a princess seamed fitted jacket and I am making a size 12 based on pattern measurements. I hope to make this soon!

Does that count as sewing? We have been making weekly or biweekly trips to CA for dr appointments and to see my dad who is on hospice care. He is 94 and we are thankful that we have had him in our lives for so long, but it is difficult to see him now. So, I just can't get myself psyched up to sew and concentrate at the moment. I did, however, notice the 5 for $5 sale on Simplicity patterns at JoAnn Fabrics. I may make a couple of them, but I will read most of the directions. I enjoy looking at new techniques and finishes, and for the grand investment of $1 a pattern, I plan to enjoy these little treasures. I hope to have some photos to share soon, not of the pattern envelopes, but of some actual projects which I may complete in the next few days.

Been Sewing--no photos

I just finished a pair of European pants from Loes Hinse--guess this is my TNT pattern tho I do make others. I KNOW they will fit, I know how to make them, the zipper is easy and neat from my perspective, and there are no surprises. That is both a good and a bad thing. No pleasant surprises of the satisfaction of a new style to sport. No wasted time from trying out a new pattern that just doesn't work for my body. So, pants are made and already being worn today with a Garbo I made several years ago and a long sleeve perfect tee from this fall. I feel put together, but the clothes are so comfy I don't feel uncomfortable in "dressy" clothes.

I have an Ottobre jacket traced for DGD and the fabric is in the dryer. I hope to get it cut out this evening and maybe even sew tomorrow. We will see how much I accomplish. The jacket is #32, The Two Way Buttoned sweater knit jacket. (*ETA from the 1/2011 issue) I'm making the first try from some sweatshirt fleece that has aged well in the stash. It's a forest green that will go with jeans or maybe a little plaid skirt I might whip up to go "with" the jacket.

I'll get some photos soon. The green Burda jacket is finished, snaps and all. I really am learning to love it!

Jacket #2--Loes Hinse Retro Jacket

I'm participating in the Jacket a Month sew along over at Stitchers' Guild. Here is my second jacket, one of Loes's earlier patterns. One of the participants in the fall seminar made a stunning version of this jacket and it's been on my mind ever since. Loes did suggest removing one inch from the sleeve side of the shoulder, tapering to the original seam allowance by the armscye notch. I made a small with no other alterations. It seems a bit big, but I like the look with it belted. I am not going to put in buttonholes, planning to use a decorative pin and/or belt for a closure. The fabric is a stretch suiting I purchased from Michael Levine's in the LA garment district a couple of years ago. I'm pleased with the jacket and will probably finish it as a suit, not sure if it will be pants or a skirt to complete the outfit. I do like it as a separate too.

My next project is going to be from Ottobre Design--a jacket for my DGD. I have a couple in mind and will need to make a final decision soon!

Can Can Skirt for DGD

I was reading a blog (My Sewing Space) and saw a darling skirt the blogger had made for her daughter. I had some fabric I knew my DGD would love and decided I would order the pattern she had used. It is the Can Can skirt at this blog http://tinyurl.com/yd2k6gh Very easy and fun to make. I made the size 8 just as the directions indicated. However, this is a neat pattern/directions because Dana gives you the ratio to make the skirt for anyone--small child through adult. I did not use as many or as full ruffles as the pattern creator did. I wanted the print to show through, but I think the idea is still the same. I think my DGD will love this one!

I saved it as a rotated photo--but when it imports to the blog it is sideways...sometimes I wonder what gremlins reside in my computer! Anyway, if you turn your head sideways, you can see the skirt and get the general idea!

Jacket Completed--Burda 1-2011 #105

I finished the jacket today, minus the snaps for the front. The directions say to use lining fabric to cover the snaps, but the lining is a contrast, so I will need to I look around for some medium green organza. I had several rough patches in making this jacket, but I am pleased with the final outcome. I used several of my sewing reference books to take the place of he confusing Burda direcions. I only have my iphone for a camera at the moment and do not know how to transfer a photo from the phone other than to send to FB or email. If anyone can send me directions, then I will post photos.

I used some green tweed I bought from Melody at Fashionistafabrics.com. It was a joy to work with, and I am really happy with the way the fabric behaved during consruction.

Hopefully, I will soon post a photo!

We are enjoying the warm weather in SoCal for a few days. Today was1 80 degrees and the beaches were packed. Fun day to be out walking in the lovely weather

Holiday Sewing

I've been sewing, but have not done much photography! I made a top from Oliver and S pattern (these are fabulous for good drafting and easy-to-follow directions) for DGD to go with her pajama pants--made several pairs of jammies for a doll she will receive for Christmas, and did some embroidered pillow cases for all of the grands. Fun sewing. Today I even made a "draft snake" for the front door of our condo unit. I think these units had carpet when first constructed and now we have large ceramic tiles on the floor of the kitchen, dining, and living rooms. Thus, a pretty generous slit under the front door. Our door opens out onto a hallway, but still cold air comes through during our rare cold spells. Easy project, found the directions on the internet. Again, I'm thankful for this media!

Happy Holidays to anyone who stops by to see this pictureless entry. I'm enjoying my "fur" coat and have a pair of LH Euro pants almost done--just a zipper and hems to go. I worked for several weeks and will return for the week after the winter break as an elementary assistant principal. Kind of a nice way to keep myself busy, make a little money, and help out our cash-strapped school district. Besides, I got to see the holiday performances and even received a few gifts and good wishes form students and staff.

Dinner with family tonight, nothing planned tomorrow, then medical appointments and a drive home on Tuesday. So thankful we can get away easily and visit my ocean on a regular basis!

Loes Hinse Sweater Coat

I had a lot of fun making this coat--pretty easy, and I love the result. This is made from faux fur snow leopard fabric I bought from Sharon at Causal Elegance. I used the sweater coat pattern with a couple of minor tweaks Loes introduced at the seminar in October. Slightly longer collar and a slightly lower V neckline. I included the in seam pockets but did not topstitch them due to the nature of the fabric I used. It will be a fun garment to wear during the fall and winter months. I did not line or change the pattern other than as already noted. I will try to add a photo of me wearing the coat, but for now it is on my dress form in the messy sewing room.

Oiver and S Bedtime Story Pajama Pants

A quick project for the younger DGKs--I made 3 pairs of pajama pants for the grands from the Oliver and S Bedtime Story Pajamas Pattern. Made B and C size 5 and a size 7 for S. Just for my records, B got a 15" inseam, C got a 17" inseam and S got the standard as made in pattern for her size.

Here's a quick picture of the pants and the pattern. I got the fabric from the JOS fabric coop. I think the kids will all enjoy them. Got the boys long sleeve red t shirts to go with and I will make DGD a t like the previous pink one. I hope I can find some red cotton lycra in the stash!

I was not aware that Ann at Gorgeous Fabrics was having a sew along, but I did these yesterday afternoon (Black Friday) and finished sewing the elastic today. So, I guess I unwittingly sewed along! I am going to make the kimono top from the pattern for DGD, by the way.

Two Tweaks done! Loes Hinse Ascot Tweak Pattern

I finished the silk tweed that was my desired garment--then I finished the linen one too. I like this pattern--easy, quick, and I think a bit dressier than a simple cardigan. The linen is from Fabric Mart, I think. It has been in the stash for a while. The silk tweed is from Casual Elegance, the wonderful fabric service run by Sharon. She and Loes work collaboratively to provide patterns and fabrics that work well together. I know I'll wear them both. Black pants, black skirt, jeans...other possibilities?

Now I have to pack up the loose sewing tools in preparation for the DGKs coming back to our house for a few days. My DGD loves to help me run my embroidery machine so we will be in the studio. I try to move pins, scissors, seam rippers, anything with sharp points.

Ascot Tweak Jacket in progress

I have some black and white silk tweed fabric to make this--but I've never made this jacket before and wanted to test the pattern first. So, from the stash, I tried this rayon linen version. It is OK and will be finished before spring! I have enough fabric left for either pants or a skirt. I'm leaning more toward a skirt since it is linen and it does wrinkle. I love that Loes' patterns go together so well--one of the sleeves is a little puckery, but that is operator error, not the pattern.

There is a post showing the Loes Hinse garments I made in Carmel. Somehow this photo was deleted, misplaced, messed up by the author, etc.

This is the new princess jacket paired with the silk blend Oxford pants. A rarity for a Loes Hinse jacket these days, there are actually functioning buttonholes in this jacket!

Covered snaps were a major element in current RTW Loes garments and the focus of a little tutorial for the seminar attendees.

First and easiest is my one sample of the cap sleeved top. Loes made this much more form fitting than mine and hers was more flattering! It is lovely made from stretch lace for an under layer with a jacket. Can also be made longer as a sheath. Loes made several from woven fabrics for the boutique--added a gusset under arm for ease of getting into the dress. I need to take out 1/2 inch on each side through the midriff area before I make another.

These two jackets are both versions of the Biarritz tweak/zipper jacket or cardigan as described in a recent newsletter from Casual Elegance. I made the black and white one as a wearable muslin and then the brown tweed one as a keeper. I still need to finish the hand work with another snap and then sew on a couple of accent buttons on the outside of the right front. The latter fabric I bought from B Black in LA last summer. It is on a chair in the sewing area at the seminar, so not the best photo. The pants with the tweed are Europeans made from some nice rayon/poly/lycra I bought at Michael Levine's in LA. I love the buttons, and they came from the local Hancock's!

Next is the new Princess Jacket based on the Bergman blouse pattern. I made this from some black puckered fabric--really like it! The jacket is very light weight and can be worn as a blouse with cami as well. I made Oxford pants from some silk blend and will use this as a holiday outfit with a lace cami or tee shirt. Pretty casual in this part of the world :>)

This jacket is sort of listing on the hanger, but it is my favorite! It's the same Biarritz tweak made from a sweater knit. Loes had it on a hanger in her boutique with the tee shirt under and I really liked the look--even the scarf. So I copied the whole shebang. It will go well with my current items and I can wear it year round with local AC in the summer! Kind of peeking out from behind is a green tee shirt--perfect tee. I made four of these while in Carmel. Easy peasy, instant gratification.

That's it for now--I cut out an ascot tweak jacket and will try to get it together in the next week or so.

Loes Seminar--Photos to come!

I had a fabulous time! Got home last night and still have laundry to do and grand kids to hug, so it will be a few days before I get organized to post what I made and how much fun I had! We had a wonderful group of women who all had a successful time making garments from Loes's patterns. Lots of laughter as well as hard work getting jackets to fit, pants "scooped", and fabrics chosen.

I made 3 jackets, 3 pairs of pants, and 4-5 tops. Others made more! On my list to finish at home are a sweater coat and one more of the Biarritz tweak/zipper tweak cardigan jackets. I'm also going to work on a new take on the Hepburn pants in a more drapey fabric. Lots to contemplate!

We are busy with the kids and a business venture, so I will see how quickly I can get my photos downloaded and organized :>)

Thinking about Sewing, Again...Loes Seminar Prep

I am going to the Loes Hinse seminar again at the end of the month and won't get any sewing done until I go--DH and I are in New England enjoying the fall color and will be gone till mid month. Home for a week, then we'll go to Carmel for the seminar. I am mentally planning what I'd like to make--and maybe do a little cutting the week we are home. For sure, I will cut out a few perfect T shirts with long sleeves for the winter. I can make these up very quickly and it is a good activity for "filler" while waiting for Loes to help others or if I get up early and want to accomplish something to get my sewing juices going!

I love the innovative designs Loes comes up with to "tweak" her basic patterns, so maybe I should just wait until I get there to cut and sew!

We are enjoying the cooler weather here and that has me thinking of jackets too. When we left Las Vegas a few days ago it was still in the 100's for the daytime high. Just not an incentive to think about winter items. Now I'm in the mood to pull out some darker colored fabrics with a little more heft to the fabric.

This morning I took a long walk and enjoyed the scenery, but also did some day dreaming about what I'd like to sew next. I "tweaked" my European pants pattern with a cruise pant--really just retraced the front of the cruise to include the European zipper front. I did taper the waist at the side seam a bit too--a closer waistline possible with the zip front. I plan to make a pair or two of this frankenpattern. Both pants fit me well and I expect this version to be an easy sew as well. I have traced the new cardigan pattern from Loes's most recent newsletter--had the pieces/parts already at home. What fabric to use to try this out....what to order from Sharon?

I sewed, no photo yet--Loes Hinse Europeans

Finally, I finished a quick project. Bought some gray fabric from Fabricmart Fabrics--it is suit weight with light blue pinstripes and a little lycra in the content. I made a pair of Loes Hinse European pants and they turned out great! Gotta love a TNT pattern! When walking at the mall the other morning I noticed a cute vest with a little ruffle detail in the window at The Limited and went back to buy it! Usually I walk before the stores open which helps with crowds as well as impulse buys! Anyway, I now have a trendy new outfit to wear in slightly cooler weather.

We are leaving the beach in the morning--hate the sign that summer is over, but it is! We always have a little trouble adjusting to desert heat, but it won't be for long.

I hope to post a few more sewing projects, but I also accepted a short-term assignment at an elementary school in need of a principal. Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's back to work I go! Only for two weeks though, and I know I will enjoy the challenge. I'll post a photo of the pants with vest just to document that I have, in fact, accomplished one project! DH and I went to the LA Garment/fabric district last week and I bought 2 pieces of fabric for pants and jacket, so I hope to get some sewing done on the side too.

A little sewing

I made some pillowcases for the kids using remnants from their crib quilts and some home dec scraps from window valances. Youngest DGS is the Mickey fan, middle DGS has an Orioles fabric quilt with some green striped contrast fabric, so he gets the green/orange/white one, and first DGD had the Garfield nursery (used by her brothers too). I used the "easy peasy pillowcase pattern" I found on google and it really is too easy for words! Nice finish too with an enclosed seam so no raveling. I'm waiting for my August Burda to show up to do a little sewing for ME!

Sewing Room Remodel--sort of

Well, due to many factors, we now have some cute little people living at our house half of their days. We bought this house after the boys were grown and really just set it up for our needs, not even for guests! So, we dismantled the exercise room (no big loss since we DO exercise daily, but rarely used the room to do it), moved our son into that room, consolidated my sewing stuff, and moved a set of bunk beds into the cutting area. They slept here last night and everything went well. Is it ideal? No. Is it safe and friendly? Absolutely. We will be here part of the time and in CA part of the time. DS will have to determine a routine and schedule so that when the children are with him, he is the parent. He is a loving, caring Dad. He has a successful career and works very hard. He will come out the other side of this tunnel with his life intact. I get to see some of my grand kids much more often!

Another quick project for the DGD--this pattern may be out of print, but I found a copy online and it arrived in just days. I made the size 8 skort in red cotton twill. The pattern is designed for knits, but this made up easily in the twill fabric. I will see DGD this weekend and hope she likes the new clothes :>)

Sewing Labels

Last summer, my DGD drew a picture while visiting--and she said it was her portrait of me. So after having it hang on the refrigerator here for a year, I wanted to do something to keep the drawing. It was in purple crayon on a thin piece of copy paper. So, I managed to scan the picture and sent it to an Etsy shop to have the drawing converted into a graphic design and then into some cute little labels for me to use in clothing for the DGDs. Here is a PDF of the design and a photo of the labels as used. I'm pleased and I think Samantha will be too when she sees how I kept her drawing "alive." I don't seem to be able to load the PDF so just a peek at the labels as sewn into the garments.

Photos with my youngest DGS. He has loved Mickey Mouse since he first saw him--a stuffed toy and then in print and on TV. He has been talking about seeing Mickey for months. So, a few days ago, we took him to meet the mouse. He was a bit hesitant, but here he is with Mickey and Grandma.

Ottobre Odds and Ends

Still not doing much sewing, but I made a few little items for DGD. Here are soome capris from an older issue and a skirt (skirt and leggings/shorts are from 1/2009) and tee from more recent ones. I just cleaned up and don't have the issues in front of me. The blue skirt is a mini in the magazine (Minna style #33)--but I added about 2 inches to the pattern and then added a 2 inch eyelet ruffle to the bottom. I also made a pair of white cotton/lycra shorts (shortened leggings Taija #32) for her to wear underneath. I have fabric (white interlock) for a coordinating tee shirt. We are going to have company and needed to clean up the sewing stuff so the guests will have a place to sleep!

The red/white stripe tee is from the most current Ottobre--again I made some shorts from the issue with the above mini--just shortened the leggings that were designed to wear under the mini. I bought some red twill and will make her a longer version of the mini from red twill. Good basics to wear to school.

Finally, the check capris are from an older issue of Ottobre and match a melon tee I made last month. She can wear these for play or school. Fun and easy items to fill out a wardrobe.

Things are still in flux but sewing does help to fill time and keep one occupied.

American Girl, Ottobre, and Kwik Sew

I have been working on some little projects for my younger DGD. A couple of outfits for her and a couple for her AG doll. The striped top for the doll is from KS 2839 and the pants are from a book of AG doll outfits--left it at the beach so I don't know the author or title! Green shorts are the same pattern and the shirt also came from that book. The kid clothes are from Ottobre and McCalls--don't have the exact pattern numbers in front of me. These were easy and fun! I made another Ottobre t for her and am finishing up some capris to go with it. More photos later.

I must say it is a great feeling too! We had a successful closing and everyone is off for summer adventures and classes and fun. A new principal has been appointed and she will report when the school office reopens in August. Great feeling!

Thanks to Lori and Summerset for the info on my wildflower--it is not a native, I don't think. We bought a bucket of wildflower seeds about 10 years ago and spread them on the flower beds at the back of the house. Some flowers reseed every year and these are my favorites!

We have some loose ends to tie up here and then we will take off for the summer to our little place at the beach. Cool breezes, morning walks along the sand, and sewing with the toys I have there. I bought and pretreated some fabrics for the grands and have my chanel style jacket packed to FINISH in the next few weeks! Even if I don't love it when it is done, I want to take this project to the end. I even have some cool trim, so I must focus myself and finish it up.

Today we are off to the Shark Reef exhibit--we've never been and it is free today for local teachers with ID badges. That's a nice perk that some of the local businesses have offered in these tough economic times. Our teachers have taken salary cuts, freezes, etc. and it is nice to know that some of the area attractions recognize these people. Of course, getting people to their properties is also a goal. I'll do some serious window shopping along the way as well :>)

We took take out dinner to DS's house last night and enjoyed a low key evening with son and grands. Nice night.

Here's the tee shirt I finally finished to go with chiffon skirt. I made a few little flowers to coordinate and pinned them to the neckline of the tee shirt. If you click on the picture it will enlarge and you can see the flowers. A fun little accent.

Directions for the flowers were also in the pattern.

Photo Update--Double Chiffon Skirt

Here's the photo--windy day so I took a quick shot on the front gate! I see you can see my shadow and a tiny poodle head above the top of the gate, so I'm including one shot inside as well. I can sew, but I am no good with photos!!!

I used some poly chiffon (can't remember from whom) I found in the stash with a nude lingerie fabric from Casual Elegance for a lining. Feels great against the skin and provides a nice modest lining!

A Little Sewing--Loes Hinse Double Chiffon Skirt

I am going to try the cut and paste method of blogging today—we’ll see if I am technologically able. I made the double layer chiffon skirt from one of Loes Hinse’s past newsletters. How easy and cute! I had to pick off the waistband because I thought I KNEW what to do without looking at the directions. Well, when I followed the directions I got a great finish and fit.

I still have some things cut out that I had hoped to finish—the tee shirt that matches the skirt for one. I have 3 more days of work as an elementary principal then I am free again. I am so grateful that I am a retired educator because today’s challenges are truly formidable.

I love reading about everyone’s projects. I hope to get back to creating a few of my own. It is not like I NEED any clothes—I just enjoy the process of making them. I also think it helps me to keep the old brain cells working. Problem solving when sewing is a good spatial relationship challenge.

Thinking about Sewing

I am still working, so not doing much sewing. This is the time of year when schools have evening activities, so that means the principal should show up! Not a bad thing, just eats up my personal time for a while. I have been thinking about sewing, however. I even have some black linen on the cutting table to make into some version of Loes Hinse pants. Easy sewing and I am pretty sure of the fit. Kind of no brainer sewing.

I went to visit my dad yesterday so we are on the road. We'll spend some time at the Happiest Place on Earth today and then head home tomorrow. The kids know that there are 12 more days of school left, so the end is in sight. Next year I think I'll stay retired!

Loes Hinse Cruise Pants

This is my first go at this pattern, but it fits very similar to the view B European pants I just made. This is a wearable muslin--used some stash fabric. I like them and will wear them. The fabric is wool or a wool blend, so not the wisest choice for spring and summer here in the desert! I do like the inseam pocket and am pleased with the look. It does not "pooch" out at the hipline. I followed the pattern directions and did the topstitching on the side seam. I often skip this step when making European or Oxford pants, but thought I'd make my first pair just as directed. I like the detail on this fabric. On a more drapey fabric I would not do the side seam stitching.

I'll do the pattern piece comparison later--too much on my plate today!

Short Vacation to Charleston

DH and I are just home from a quick 8 days to Charleston and Savannah. Great food, good weather, beautiful scenery, and good friends. Perfect trip. We got home on Weds night and I worked Thurs and Fri. Today we'll have DS and his family for dinner. Pretty nice week. Sewing still on the back burner for a little while.

I have been MIA from the blog---just working and life have taken up my days! I am enjoying my gig as an elementary principal and will finish out the year in the position. I do find tha dental appointments, phys therapy, etc. AFTER work make for some very long days!!!

Cheers to all of you sewists who work, sew, take care of families, volunteer, etc. I have put sewing on the back burner, but am working on some LH basic pleat plants without the pleats. They are cut out, serged edges, and will put together a little at a time as my life permits.

I have been looking at everyone else's creations and am sewing in my mind! There will be time again soon.

Burda Chanel-Type Jacket

Not finished! But the jacket is basically put together and the lining is too. Now I need to put them together! I do have it together enough to fit it on the form I made in October. Seems to be OK fit wise. DH asked why it has taken me so long to make this jacket, and I didn't have a great response other than it's a Burda Style pattern--had to trace and decipher the instructions without any illustrations. I've not made this exact kind of jacket before so I'm a little less confident than when I remake one or make something similar to previous garments. Learning new things is good for the brain, eh?

A work in progress: the fabric is a wool/rayon blend from Melody at Fashionista Fabrics. I have ribbon and braid to put around the sleeves and down the front edges. That will be the finishing touch done by hand so it can be removed if my taste changes...

Some Sewing for Me!

I made a quick jacket and pants combo for me! Jacket is Loes Hinse Paris (seminar pattern) and pants are LH Cruise pants. The pants are my first go at this pattern--not bad right from the envelope. The jacket is slightly restyled by Loes from last fall's version. The fabrics were both in my stash--the Gray Lady for the jacket from Nancy Erickson and only aged a couple of months. The pants fabric is of unknown origin and a rayon/poly/lycra mix. Both sewed up quite easily and I am looking forward to having a few new pieces for work next week. I guess it's only for me as this will be a new staff and thus everything is "new" so to speak!

The wind is howling here--we kept our middle DGS last night and he ended up in our bed, afraid of the noises in the house caused by the wind.

I hope to make a few more things this week--maybe I will even finish the Chanel type jacket I put away last month! Or not, we'll see how my patience and enthusiasm match :>)

Vacation and Then Work

I've been pondering this, and decided I'd take this position for the rest of the school year. Our state is in dire straights financially and our local school district must tighten the budget even more. So, where there was no funding, there is now negative funding. There are administrative positions that will not be filled, so schools go without a principal? I can step in and fill the position for a couple of months. The pay is NOT great and there are no benefits, but I earned a nice living working here and I can give some time back.

So, I better sew like a mad woman the next few days :>) I made 2 t shirts today and will finish up the 3rd pair of L Hinse pants too. I don't really need any clothes, but they are fun to make! The new Burda has several tempting items and I hope to trace those items and maybe cut them out as well.

DH and I are going out for a frozen yogurt. Have a nice evening!

Quick Ottobre Project

I know I haven't done much posting or sewing--went to CA for a week to enjoy the weather, visit my dad, and volunteer at the Aquarium of the Pacific. All wonderful ways to spend some time! I did cut out a skirt (Ottobre 1/2010 style #20 Garden Flower skirt) for DGD before we left and sewed it in little spurts while at the condo. I also cut out some of the hearts in the skirt fabric and did a "quick and dirty" application on a purchased t shirt. No changes to the skirt during construction. After it was finished I realized that there was a good chance that the skirt would be too big around for DGD so I made a self casing on the inside waist and put buttonhole elastic through the casing and attached it to two buttons I placed on the interior of the skirt. It will be a cute school outfit. I want to do some sewing this week--might be going back to work again next week. I'm still thinking about it.

Cyber Friends

First, I want to thank you for the kind comments left on my last post. I am just a satisfied customer who found some patterns that fit me. I use lots of different patterns but have had the most success with these. Finally!

My husband and I had the most pleasant dinner last night with a friend I met via the internet and whom I have met twice when she came to my city. Many of you may know her as she runs a fabulous fabric shop in Kansas. I've never been to Kansas, but I have become a customer and love the service she provides as well. No need to drop names--just wanted to say how nice it is to make these connections with like-minded women and be able to share online and face-to-face time with them!

I have a few other items I've finished recently--will get photos up soon.

Biarritz Jackets from Loes Hinse's Pattern

Mostly photos this time--the white boucle is the most recently finished, although I made it in October it took me forever to choose buttons and put in the buttonholes. These jackets are all from the same basic pattern (Biarritz size sm) but have been changed in various ways. Some from the "tweaks" that Loes sells through Sharon's business, Casual Elegance Fabrics, and some from tweaks that Loes provides for seminar attendees. It is great to be able to make a jacket tht fits and add different finishes to make it seem like a totally new garment without the frustrations of fitting, etc. I should have rotated the images, but I guess it's too late now! I love the simple black and white wool version--goes great with jeans and dress pants. Also the multi colored knit one--more like a sweater that I wear OFTEN. The fitst photo, far right jacket is a grey knit that Sharon sold and that Loes used for jackets in her boutique. I was on the fence about making it and didn't buy fabric at the seminar. Luckily, I changed my mind in time and love this one too. This jacket just fits my lifestyle.

I'm a Dud!

I haven't sewn much so I haven't blogged--but I've been busy! I am enjoying my role as the AP at an elementary school and we have made a few quick trips to visit family. We spent the last weekend with our older son and his family up north--and we got to wake up to a foot of new snow. Quite a special treat for the desert rats of Las Vegas!

I do have sewing projects underway--just not finihsed. We will be in town for the next few weeks and I should be able to get some things done after work or on the weekends. I have been doing some fabric shopping at Lucy's and Chez Ami. I'm trying to contribute in some way! LOL!

Sewing Yes!

I made a Burda boatneck t shirt today--just had to make something I could sew and finish in one sitting. I still have the jacket under construction and bought ribbon and trim to finish it off--took DH into the fabric/trim store with me and he instantly was able to find great choices. I did not bring my camera with me, so neither the fabric/trim or the tshirt will be shown today. I used a knit border print and did a really easy trick--used the border for the hem and sleeve hems--no finishing needed on either the sleeves or the bottom of the garment. Instant gratification.

We are in CA--follow up med visits for my knee surgery, visits to my dad, and a little walking in the sunny outdoors. Oh yeah--we did have to sit inside for a couple of days to let the rain fall. The foothills are green and the sky was so clear today--luckily we do not live in the mudslide area although our little town got deluged during the last series of storms. We need the water in the West so I am not really complaining.

I've been reading, I've been looking at others' pictures and projects, but I have not been sewing! It's been a busy week at work and I had a couple of medical appts on top of 3 physical therapy sessions. I'm doing well, just kinda old and creaky :>)

Back to Work!

I am going to take the position as Asst Principal at a local elementary school. I'll wear the clothes I've been making and feel as though my time and expertise may benefit others. The pay is NOT the incentive, believe me. LOL>

I cut out the lining for the Burda jacket and will try to get the "big pieces" together before tomorrow night. I think I need to order some Petersham ribbon and maybe some black trim to finish it off...that is, if it fits! I put the sleeveless outer fabric on the dressform I made last summer. It seems to be OK fitwise, so I shall go forward!

The fabric is a rayon/wool blend from Melody at Fashionista Fabrics--it is really pretty but very fragile as well. Hope it holds together well enough to get the jacket finished.

Work? Do I want to do this?

I am still sewing--small pieces of the AG doll wardrobe and I'm working on jacket 108 from the Feb Burda Style magazine. This is sort of a wearable muslin so I did not include the pockets, but will put some sort of embellishment on the front. I looked at a $1200 jacket today at Nordstrom that did not have pockets either, just faux flaps. Guess I can do that too!

I've been a little antsy since the holidays and contacted my former colleagues to see if anyone needed an admin sub. Very little response came my way, so I have planned a few other activities around my current physical therapy sessions. Well, this afternoon a request came to take over as the principal of an elementary school for the remainder of the year. Hmmmm. I didn't give an answer, asked for some time to think about it. So, by tomorrow morning I need to make up my mind. I worked at an elementary school last spring (as a sub AP) and enjoyed most days. It is a different work load and level of responsibility as the principal. I have "been there/done that" as a middle school principal. BUT, this school has 633 students, not 1900. A staff that is also one thrid the size of my last school, etc. I do need a place to wear some of the clothes I've been sewing!

So, between now and tomorrow morning I'll have to finalize my decision. I know I can work a somewhat flexible schedule and take a few days here and there as needed to visit my dad, run away with my husband, etc. We'll see.

I need to finish the doll clothes a little at a time. Jammies are done, more cut out, etc.

I'll let you know what I decide.

Sewing Doll Clothes

I am making clothes for my DGD's AG doll. Both DGD and doll are named Samantha. I had to get a gently loved doll from ebay as the Samantha doll has been retired. DDIL isn't sure that DGD is mature enough for the doll, so for right now she is MINE and I am sewing for her. I spent a long time cutting out the tiny little pattern pieces and am slowly cutting out some fabric. I am doing a marathon cut and will keep a box of things that are ready to sew. I figure they will be good therapy between other projects and won't take too much time to complete, one at a time.

So far I have completed one pair of panties, so I'm not showing a photo today. I am searching for the Pleasant Co pattern that includes undies, but so far no luck. Part of the fun I guess.

Walking Totals for 2009

This is a screen shot of the year's Nike Plus walk records from Jan 19, 2009 to Jan 19, 2010. This is a device that pairs a sensor on/in my walking shoes with my ipod Nano. I'm not a real record keeper or statistician, but this system easily keeps track of my daily walks. DH walks with me and wears a pedometer. I do not wear my walking shoes all of the time--for example when we are on vacation, especially in Europe, I wear other comfortable shoes but not lace up walking shoes. Therefore, there are times when I have put in many miles and don't get them recorded. So, on the ipod, I have recorded 1403 miles and DH has recorded 2295 miles for 2009. I'm really pleased and proud of these miles--many years I did not have/make the time to exercise and I suffered for that. Now, it is the first thing I do each day and it is something I do with DH. We enjoy the time together as well as the added benefit of getting exercise. We have walked the sidewalks of Paris, the French countryside, crowded streets in Budapest and early mornings in Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla. We walk the neighborhoods of Belmont Shore in the summer and the malls of Las Vegas in the winter. I have developed a back problem which makes me avoid hills whenever possible, so the local walking trail is out of bounds for a while. Hopefully, physical therapy will correct that or at least improve it and I will be back on our LV trails too.

Loes Hinse short jacket and Ottobre Skirt

Photos today! Not great quality, but you can see what I finished! I made this white boucle jacket last October at the Loes Hinse seminar...but just finished the buttons and button holes. Now I can wear it! Also finished up the inside with shoulderpads and the velcro to keep it them in place.

Also, a photo of the Ottobre skirt and the lining--that's my favorite part--love the lining. It just feels great! It is a dark navy blue, but sure looks black in the photo. On the right side you can see the pleats--sort of clumped up on the left side.

Ottobre Skirt/Stash Reduction

I need a photo, but until I get the camera out, I'll just tell you what I made. I traced the pattern for an Ottobre skirt for me before Christmas. In an attempt to straighten things up for the holidays, house guests, wrapping table, etc. I misplaced the pieces. When I found them in plain sight the other day, I looked for a piece of fabric I could use as a wearable muslin, and I now have a new skirt!

I found the end of a piece of wool twill I'd used to make some dress slacks. I also needed lining, so I dipped into the cupboard and found this piece of silk charmeuse that I ordered from Fabric Mart at least 8 years ago. Hmmmm. Anyway, the skirt is a bit different with large slanted pleats at the hip and I really like it! The silk feels delicious on the inside. I didn't bring the magazine with directions with me (we are at our condo), so I just put it together in a way that made sense to me. Yippee, it worked. I put in the hem this morning in the car on the way to meet my sister and her SO at Disneyland. I really like the skirt and think it will be a good staple for my more casual wardrobe.

Ottobre sizing? I'm still not so sure I made just the right size. So--given my measurements, I am about 1/2 way between a 38 and a 40--so I just made the pattern by placing the marks between the 2 sizes on the pattern. I labeled the pieces a size 39 and am pleased. Could be a little more snug at the waist, but it is certainly wearable "as is."

Loes Hinse Chenille Jacket

One of the projects from my seminar experience in October--one I didn't want to make at first! This jacket was for sale at Loes's fabulous boutique in Carmel and though I loved the style, I was unsure about the color. Well, time is always good for me to use to mull things over. So, after I got home I contacted Sharon at Casual Elegance and ordered this unique fabric. It is a knit chenille fabric with open loops near one selvedge.

The pattern is one of the special ones that are available to seminar attendees, but could be created using one of her other jacket patterns as well. The really special thing about this is the fabric, and I'm not sure where one could obtain this other than through Sharon. Anyway, I am pleased with the final product and only need to finish my shoulder pads to make it complete. You can see from the cutting table that it really is messy, but serging the seams made it clean and neat on the inside. A quick and fun project!

Loes Hinse Seminar Outfit

I went to lunch today with 4 of my dearest friends. Here's what I wore: LH Tunic top and European pants with a circle scarf--all made during my Oct seminar days and all fabric from Sharon at Casual Elegance. I rarely have photos of my garments with me in them, so here is a change from the norm. Happy New Year!

First Stash Project

I am trying to make a small dent in my stash, so here is my first project! I made a wrist wallet using the Embroidery Garden pattern. I walk every day and usually just leave my ID, etc. at home because DH goes along with me and has all that stuff in his wallet. But, sometimes I go alone and have to carry keys, ID, and credit card/money. I rarely walk in pants with pockets, so this can be a problem for me. I had a small wristlet with a strap, but that bothers me and I can't wear the pendant type due to neck issues. (My girlfriend told me we are entering the "rust years" so I guess I will have to learn to deal with this!) The wrist wallet is the perfect answer. The whole thing is made using an embroidery machine as an "in the hoop" project. Even the zipper insertion is SIMPLE and done by the machine! I did use velcro as a closure rather than snaps as used in the pattern.

Here is a photo of the finished project. I used some quilt scraps from my mom's stash. I took a few things when we cleaned out her sewing stuff. My sister wanted her machine and serger and I took some of the fabrics cause I didn't need ANOTHER machine. LOL. Mom would love that her fabric is being used.

Ready to Wrap

Here is the little t shirt for DGD with her skirt. Add a pair of black tights and her fancy shoes, and she is ready to go! Fun, easy sewing for a little girl.

Loes Hinse and Kwik Sew

Finally finished up a couple of projects and have one cut out and ready to go. I also took my trusty Bernina 1130 in for servicing on Monday and will pick her up today! Maybe not the best timing, but I thought it was time.

First is the Loes Hinse tunic top, shorter version, made in a small. This is similar to one I saw in her boutique--knit fabric for the body and lace for the sleeves. I could not find the beautiful lace fabric she had used but this is an OK copy. The sweater knit is from Sharon at Casual Elegance and the lace from Gorgeous Fabrics.com.

Next is a KS pattern I used to made DGD a skirt and have cut out a copy cat top. The skirt is from a remnant of the boot skirt I finished at the LH seminar in Oct. I used the KS pattern exactly as the directions indicated until it came to the waistband elastic. I used a piece of button hole elastic, made a button hole in the back skirt piece at the edge of the turn over and inserted the elastic. Instead of sewing it at both side seams before stitching down the back casing, I stitched it on one side and pulled it through the button hole on the other side. Sew on a button and voila--we're done and DGD can adjust the waist.

To go with the above skirt, I cut out a top from the same pattern--but I tapered the sleeves to a more conventional shape. I did not think the lace would drape in the bell shape. So, as soon as I finish up this top, we will have similar outfits! We won't ever wear them at the same time, so I thought it was sort of fun.

The flannel in the background of the photos is next up for jammies. I might finish them before the big day, or I might not. We'll see how other responsibilities consume my time in the ensuing days!

Waylaid...but getting back on track...

Sometimes life just kind of infringes upon my sewing...been in CA to see my dad, check on our condo, volunteer at the Aquarium, visit old friends, etc. ALL good things, but not sewing related. I did make a little skirt for my DGD and have a dressy t shirt cut out to sew up when I put cream colored thread on the serger! I cut a shirt for me and one for her--so sewing should be easy and sort of assembly line style.

Second, I think I am going to give myself the challenge of sewing up some of the stash! I have always enjoyed collecting, but now the extent of the collection has sort of exceeded my level of enjoyment. So, I will be making some things for the kids and some from me, but all from the stash for the next month or two.

We'll see if I can really do this!

Happy Holidays--I know Chanukah begins tomorrow, and Kwanza will soon be here. My family celebrates Christmas and that is coming too soon! I'll be back before the 25th with some photos to show some progress...

I have this blog because I want to document the sewing I've done--first for myself, but also for the others who read and look at the photos. I just want to say THANK YOU for the kind comments you leave--makes the world of difference some days to see that someone else has looked at the garments and shared a kind word.
